The Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) is an association of almost 1500 autonomous churches in 75 countries around the world. It began in 1950 when the Evangelical Free Church of America (Swedish) and the Norwegian-Danish Evangelical Free Church Association merged. The EFCA's governing body is the annual national Leadership Conference. The Board of Directors serves as the governing body between the Leadership Conferences and on behalf of the body. EFCA churches belong to Districts, which support local congregations and encourage close cooperation between EFCA churches and their district. EFCA churches are autonomous, congretationally governed and interdependent.
Why "Evangelical" and "Free"? Evangelical refers to the commitment to proclaiming the gospel and to the Scriptures as being the "inspired, inerrant, authoritative and sufficient Word of God." Free references the polity, structure and organization (committed to a congregational form of government).
